Help

Long story short, I tried to piggyback something small off of the interior cabin light with t-splices. The interior light has a black ground, red power and white to switch between always on and on when a door is open. In my efforts to get the additional item to only be on with the doors open, I ended up with splices on all three wires.

Not sure what happened, but now the OEM interior light won’t work (whatever) and the stereo system isn’t working at all. No power to the amp, no power to the head, the antenna isn’t rising... I have no idea where to start troubleshooting. I’m unsure of how these two things are related, but they must be right? Stereo was working just fine previously... Any ideas?

I checked the fuse I put in between the amp and battery and it’s fine.

(edit) I just learned there is a SECOND fuse box next to the clutch pedal. And apparently there’s a fuse that protects both interior lighting and the radio. That’s likely the culprit. Does anyone have a small child I can use to get to this fuse box..? Convertible doesn’t help with this unfortunately

maybe don’t mess with the passenger airbag

When I pulled that long ago I found that 100% of the sensors were inoperable

I can try to get at the fusebox this weekend, I’ve got slim hands, mostly. Plus I can get into creative positions despite being 6 feet tall.

You game?

out of context this might get taken the wrong way

You can consider it an inside joke, if you like.

Fixed. I’m an electrical wizard and Boeing and NASA should be begging for my skills

(it was the second in-cabin fuse box)

Thanks man! I got it figured out, but I appreciate the thought

Don’t get too good at it, or people will start driving their electrical problems over to your place.

Speaking of electrical wizardry, are you interested in helping me with an idea I have for my car? I want to wire up some strobes in the backup lights and the corner lights, and have them blink-strobe at the same time as the hazard lights.
I call it the Enhanced Hazard Light Package.

Ohhhhh. I like this idea. Yes, but with a new job overlapping with an old job I’m super busy for about 3 weeks

How did you not know about the interior fuse box? Lol I’ve blown many fuses with my stupid parking lights. I have completely given up on that problem since I don’t really need those anyways. It’s a fault somewhere in the circuit, not the socket since the turn signal part works just fine. But yeah there are definitely fuses for that stuff in there. What are you trying to splice into the door open light?

No rush. My main concern is coming up with a way to get taillights + corner lights to blink like normal hazards, while strobe lights blink in the reverser light housing and the corner light housings. The goal should be to have 5 strobe blinks for every 1 hazard blink.

Two ways to do this, I think. The first is more complicated, and would require programming a controller to observe the Lighting Control Module behavior and command the strobes to work in conjunction with the LCM.

The alternative is to just disconnect the LCM from the hazard light switch (or wire up a separate hazard light switch), and have that be connected to a simple timed relay switch, which then sends power to the corner lights *and* the strobes at the same time.

What do you think?

This is actually the first fuse the Miata has ever blown, and it’s obviously my fault. Oh and better interior lights lol. I bought two LED halo rings because they were like a dollar each, and I’m unsure of what to do with them. They are rediculously bright, I’ve seen some Miata owners put them in the turn signal housing as parking/running lights

Connect it to a toggle switch—completely separate from taillights/corner lights—and manually strobe the light to whatever time you desire.

(but actually I think the second idea is a good one. First step is figuring out the fitment of the lights though)

Having the strobes independently actuated risks having the lights not behave in time with one another. I don’t want the taillights to be blinking separately from the strobes, because that can create an “alternating pattern” — and those patterns are very frequently used by police and emergency vehicles.

It’s absolutely crucial that I get the light timing right (taillights & strobes blink at the same time, never alternately), so it does NOT get mistaken for a police vehicle.

So to achieve that timing, it’s important to set up a timed relay that’s connected to strobes AND corner lights. The relay actuates the blinks, which also controls the power going to the strobes at the same time. So when the relay switches on, the corner lights come on at the same time as the strobes; and when the switch goes off, the corner lights turn off as the strobes do.

Oh yeah the NA doesn’t even have an overhead light, I forgot about that. I at least had that and replaced it with a nice LED light. Now it’s a very usable map light. Although I usually just have it switched off since I never put the top up and just use the street lamps instead lol.
